DESCRIPTION:Introduction \nThe NHPRC seeks archival projects that will significantly improve online public discovery and use of historical records collections. We welcome projects that engage the public\, expand civic education\, and promote understanding of the nation’s history\, democracy\, and culture from the founding era to the present day. The Commission encourages projects focused on collections of America’s early legal records\, such as the records of colonial\, territorial\, county\, and early statehood and tribal proceedings that document the evolution of the nation’s legal history. \nProjects may preserve and process historical records to: \n\nArrange or re-house and describe collections\nConvert existing description for online access\nCreate new online Finding Aids to collections\nDigitize historical records collections and make them freely available online\n\nAll types of historical records are eligible\, including documents\, photographs\, born-digital records\, and analog audio and moving images. \nThe successful application will: \n\ndemonstrate the value of the collections to public understanding of United States democracy and culture;\noutline a project that addresses archival best practices;\nbe appropriately staffed with archivists;\npropose a budget that accomplishes the project in a cost-effective manner; and\noutline activities that bring researchers to the collections included in the project as well as the rest of the repository’s holdings.\n\nFor a comprehensive list of Commission limitations on funding\, please see: What we do and do not fund . \nAward Information\nA grant is for one to two years and for up to $150\,000. The “Wikipedia Workbook for Cultural Institutions” (PDF link) is designed to help Wikipedians\, Wikimedians in Residence and interested GLAM institutions (Galleries\, Libraries\, Archives\, Museums) to survey opportunities for engagement with Wikipedia and its related projects. The Workbook gives an overview of key projects\, the ways in which they can and cannot be used\, and where to find resources to learn more about using them. Both Wikipedians and GLAM professionals have specialized knowledge and skills. This Workbook attempts to introduce key concepts and information that will be useful to both groups and support more rewarding conversations and collaborations. \nThe Workbook is organized so that it pairs information with suggested tasks. You can focus on the content that is most useful to you. Major sections include: Using this workbook\, Wikipedia articles\, Wikimedia Commons\, Wikidata\, Logic models and metrics\, Institutional workflows\, and a bibliography of Resources. Sections include topics such as OpenRefine\, InteGraality\, and dealing with disinformation. The intention is not to teach someone everything they may need to know; rather\, it gives starting points for further exploration. The Workbook can help Wikimedians and GLAM partners to assess their resources\, identify areas where they can potentially contribute\, define their goals\, and plan ways to measure their impact. \nThe Wikipedia Workbook for Cultural Institutions was developed with support from Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Miami\, Florida\, and is freely available on Wikimedia Commons.

In the face of rapid cultural\, social\, political\, and technological change\, history’s importance as a guide for our future has become clearer than ever. Documenting during crises\, archiving our collective past\, supporting researchers and revolutionaries alike\, public historians are part of the landscape of revolution. SUMMARY:Leveraging the Decentralized Web to Preserve Cultural Heritage
DESCRIPTION:As part of DPLA’s ongoing effort to serve as a bridge between their institutional partners and emerging technologies\, DPLA has started to explore the benefits of decentralized storage. Long-term storage on the decentralized web is one approach to ensuring the protection of cultural artifacts and heritage –– against both natural and man-made threats\, such as natural disasters\, loss of funding\, or technological failures. In this webinar\, we will share the results of a pilot project to upload some of our partner content onto Filecoin’s decentralized storage network. During the webinar\, we will be joined by speakers from the Filecoin Foundation for the Decentralized Web (FFDW) to help the DPLA community understand  decentralized storage technology and how they can leverage it for added resilience. \nSpeaker Jefferson Sankara is a Senior Software Product Engineer at the Filecoin Foundation\, where he leads the development of Singularity—the only open-source\, end-to-end data onboarding platform for the Filecoin network. With over a decade of experience in product management\, data science\, machine learning\, and blockchain technology\, he specializes in creating tools that empower organizations to preserve\, discover\, and derive long-term value from decentralized storage networks. SUMMARY:The NEW Michigan Memories
DESCRIPTION:Join DPLA as we spotlight the recent relaunch of Michigan Memories\, a website that allows users to search the online collections of cultural institutions all around the state. Michigan Memories is the Michigan-centric counterpart to the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA)\, and the new version offers support for exhibits and educational resources about the state of Michigan and the people who live there. Many of our DPLA hubs are initiatives with close ties to state-based memory portals\, and Michigan’s challenges and learnings offer useful insight for the whole DPLA Network. \nThe Michigan Service Hub was created in 2015 as a collaborative project by the Library of Michigan\, Wayne State University\, the University of Michigan\, Michigan State University\, Western Michigan University\, and the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services. The service hub works with archives\, libraries\, museums\, and historical societies around Michigan to help them share their publicly accessible\, online collections more widely through the DPLA and Michigan Memories. Funding for the new site was provided in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Library of Michigan. \nRegister to receive Zoom information. \nSpeaker Richard C. Adler is the coordinator of the Michigan Service Hub\, part of the hub network of the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA).
