SUMMARY:Practical Approaches to Reparative Description Workshop Series: Local Contexts: Tools for Supporting Indigenous Rights and Interests in Collections
DESCRIPTION:Every Indigenous community has cultural and biological knowledge within educational systems\, archives\, libraries\, and museums that they do not own\, do not control\, and cannot govern circulation over. Local Contexts is a global nonprofit organization that was founded to address the needs of Indigenous communities and local organizations who wanted a practical method to deal with the range of intellectual property issues that arise in relation to managing cultural heritage materials. The Local Contexts Traditional Knowledge and Biocultural Labels and Notices are tools for Indigenous communities and collections- and research-based institutions to support Indigenous cultural authority and data sovereignty. In this webinar\, which is being hosted by the DPLA Rights Statements Working Group\, the Local Contexts team will introduce the Labels and Notices and how they can be used to support Indigenous rights and interests in collections and data. \nPresenters\n\nDr. Stephany RunningHawk Johnson is a Citizen of the Oglala Lakota Nation and the Local Contexts Founding Executive Director. Stephany was previously an Assistant Professor in Cultural Studies and Social Thought in Education at Washington State University. Her scholarship examines the limitations and possibilities of decolonizing approaches to science education in schools\, and explores how changes in educational policy and practice that center Indigenous knowledges and ways of knowing have a positive impact.\nCorrie Roe is the Local Contexts Director of Outreach and Strategy. In her role\, Corrie supports Indigenous communities\, institutions\, and researchers to learn about and adopt the Local Contexts system. Corrie is a settler living on Paugussett and Wappinger Homelands with a background in anthropology and museum studies.\nEmily Santhanam is a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation and the Local Contexts Outreach Coordinator (Americas). Within this role\, Emily supports multifaceted outreach efforts by cultivating and sustaining Local Contexts’ network of Indigenous communities\, institutions\, and researchers. Prior to her involvement with Local Contexts\, Emily worked in multiple curatorial and research capacities for cultural organizations and museums across the country.\n\nPlease register here.

SUMMARY:Teaching and Learning with DPLA Resources
DESCRIPTION:Are you “hungry” for resources that will inspire rich discussion in your classes? Join the DPLA Outreach & Assessment Working Group and Joanna to explore the Primary Source Sets from DPLA\, including this example – “Feeding the Hungry with Food Stamp Programs.” In this session\, we’ll chat about the structure of the existing Primary Source Sets and use framing questions to see what might be missing. Joanna will provide an OER Commons template for you to curate additional resources and provide feedback on what else could enrich these sets. Bring your appetite because we’ll be providing a lot to consume. \nJoanna Schimizzi is a Biology teacher in North Carolina and a Professional Learning Specialist with ISKME. While getting her Master’s in Education from Northeastern University\, she became extremely interested in classroom culture and student identity. This led her to work with ISKME and OER Commons to support educators in finding Open Educational Resources (OER) so that resources can be modified and remixed to include a wider variety of perspectives and experiences. Joanna is mom to two boys and lives with her husband in a little town outside of Charlotte\, NC. \nPlease register here.

SUMMARY:DPLA Coffee Chat: A Wikimedia Case Study: Columbus Metropolitan Library and Ohio Digital Network
DESCRIPTION:In this DPLA Network Coffee Chat\, representatives from the Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML)\, Ohio Digital Network\, and DPLA will discuss their recent collaboration to share over 350\,000 images from CML’s digital collections to Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia in July. In the first two months\, these images received over 3 million page views in Wikimedia’s sites. The project relied upon Ohio Digital Network aggregation and Digital Public Library of America’s pipeline to Wikimedia Commons and was initiated after an inquiry from an interested member of the library’s community. This is a new\, developing project\, and we’ll discuss how it has unfolded from inception to final execution\, to give others a sense of what participation in DPLA’s Wikimedia project is like. \nIn the second hour\, attendees are invited to stay for an optional guided group editing session with Dominic Byrd-McDevitt\, DPLA’s Data & Partnerships Strategist\, to add images\, captions\, and depicts statements to Wikipedia. In this interactive workshop\, you’ll be exposed to Wikipedia editing skills in a relaxed setting (no experience necessary!) while contributing to the impact of CML’s project! \nPlease register here.

SUMMARY:CFP: National Council for History Education 2024
DESCRIPTION:NCHE Call for Proposals\, Due by September 25\, 2023\nHistory at the Crossroads\nMarch 7-9\, 2024\, Cleveland\, OH\nHistory educators work at the juncture of past and future\, building the historical skills and knowledge that will equip young people to engage fully in the world they inherit. History teachers also work at the nexus of education\, policy\, and politics\, a crossroads that has become increasingly challenging since 2020. At the same time\, history education offers the promise of meeting the challenges of our times with informed historical practice and responsive pedagogies. By cultivating History’s Habits of Mind\, teachers can support students’ understanding of the historical roots that shape their lives. Together\, the content and skills taught in history classrooms prepare students to engage constructively with the challenges of the future. \nNCHE invites proposals for its 2024 conference in Cleveland that explore the multifocal ways that history educators can leverage the power of history at the crossroads in their own classrooms. Proposals may explore one or more of the following themes. \n\nPower and representation\nIndividualism and the common good\nFree speech and digital media\nAbsent narratives and underrepresented histories\nHistory as a foundation for civic education\nThe role of history in a time of public debate\nInnovating with technology in history classrooms\n\nSessions may focus on local\, regional\, national\, or world history for elementary\, middle\, high school\, and college classrooms. NCHE encourages submissions that offer rich historical content\, innovative pedagogical strategies\, and that foster inquiry and critical thinking. \nBreakout Session:  These teacher workshops are typically interactive “how to” sessions designed for the K-12 educator and are 50 minutes in length. \nMini Session: Mini Session topics range from teaching ideas to research reports. Presenters have 15 minutes to present information and answer questions. Each mini session typically includes three separate 15-minute presentations in the same room within a 50-minute time period. \nPoster Session: Poster Session topics range from teaching ideas to research reports. Poster presenters display their information visually (ex. poster/display board) and interact with interested attendees during the 30-minute session. Presenters remain with their posters. The poster session period may include 8-15 simultaneous presenters.

SUMMARY:DLF AIG Cost Assessment Working Group Discussion - Digitization Vendors
DESCRIPTION:Please join the DLF AIG Cost Assessment Working Group for a discussion session on digitization vendors. We will be discussing the results of the recent Vendor Registry subgroup’s survey on digitization vendors\, followed by breakout sessions focused on experiences with digitization equipment vendors\, still image digitization service providers\, and audiovisual digitization service providers. Whether you’re about to start your first digitization project or have years of working with digitization vendors under your belt we invite you to come share your knowledge and learn from the experience of others! \nWe welcome representatives from vendor organizations to attend but request that your attendance be limited to the general discussion sessions and vendor breakout room to encourage free and open discussion. A vendor breakout room will provide an opportunity for vendors and attendees to connect\, ask/answer any questions\, and discuss working relationships.  This breakout room will not be a forum for any sales pitches. \nThis session will not be recorded but a summary of the discussions will be released.. Please register for this discussion so we can gather information to help guide the discussion and provide login information: https://forms.gle/6MbpN7p9WeG6wrUC9. \nAbout the DLG AIG Cost Assessment Working Group: \nA subgroup of the Assessment Interest Group\, the Cost Working group is an ideal place for digital lab practitioners and managerial staff alike to come together to talk about practical ways to assess the resources necessary to plan and execute successful digitization projects. \nThe AIG Cost Group focuses on identifying tools that may serve a wide range of digitization efforts. Our current goal is to analyze the data collected through multiple small surveys in 2021 and 2022 and use it to inform new initiatives. \nBeyond the surveys\, we continue to support the project subgroups that developed from members’ shared interests and work on various resources and issues. The current subgroups are insourcing vs. outsourcing\, a registry for vendors\, assessing scans per linear feet\, best practices\, and cost estimation. \nIf you have any questions\, please feel free to reach out to the group chairs: Rachel Senese (rsenese@gsu.edu) or Julia Simic (Jsimic@uoregon.edu).

SUMMARY:DPLA Book Talk: Recoding America\, with Jennifer Pahlka
DESCRIPTION:On July 24\, 2023\, at 11a MT/10a PT\, DPLA will host author Jennifer Pahlka to talk about her important new book\, Recoding America: Why Government Is Failing in the Digital Age and How We Can Do Better.\n______________________ \nA bold call to reexamine how our government operates—and sometimes fails to—from President Obama’s former deputy chief technology officer and the founder of Code for America. \nJust when we most need our government to work—to decarbonize our infrastructure and economy\, to help the vulnerable through a pandemic\, to defend ourselves against global threats—it is faltering. Government at all levels has limped into the digital age\, offering online services that can feel even more cumbersome than the paperwork that preceded them and widening the gap between the policy outcomes we intend and what we get. \nBut it’s not more money or more tech we need. Government is hamstrung by a rigid\, industrial-era culture\, in which elites dictate policy from on high\, disconnected from and too often disdainful of the details of implementation. Lofty goals morph unrecognizably as they cascade through a complex hierarchy. But there is an approach taking hold that keeps pace with today’s world and reclaims government for the people it is supposed to serve. Jennifer Pahlka shows why we must stop trying to move the government we have today onto new technology and instead consider what it would mean to truly recode American government. \nLearn more about Jennifer Pahlka’s work at recodingamerica.us. \nPlease register here.
