SUMMARY:BCMIG Fall 2024 Virtual Program: Conceptual Models in Digital Collections
DESCRIPTION:Please join ALA CORE’s Bibliographic Conceptual Models Interest Group (BCMIG) on Friday\, September 20\, 2024 at 12pm MT/11AM PT for the next virtual learning session. Our theme will be conceptual modeling and digital collections. The session will consist of two presentations (see details below)\, followed by Q&A. \nRegistration: https://ala-events.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJEkcemoqjwsE9KQnuXAfckzvyjp8JTm5Boc \nRound Pegs in Square Holes: Metadata Application Profiles in Large-Scale Metadata Aggregation \nTeresa K. Hebron\, Mountain West Digital Library \nAbstract: Mountain West Digital Library (MWDL) was founded in 2001 and offers a public search portal supporting discovery of over a million items from digitized historical collections throughout the Mountain West. Aggregation necessitates a metadata application profile (MAP) to ensure metadata consistency and interoperability from the member network of libraries\, archives\, and community history organizations. Unique issues arise in combining metadata from diverse digital repository platforms and aggregation tech stacks introduce further constraints. Upstream aggregation of metadata in the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) also influences local and regional modeling decisions. This presentation will briefly trace the history of MWDL’s MAPs\, focusing primarily on decisions and changes made in the most recent version published in early 2020. \nBio: Teresa K. Hebron is the current Program Director of Mountain West Digital Library (based at University of Utah\, Salt Lake City). She joined MWDL in 2018 as Digital Metadata Librarian with a deep background in project management and technical support for integrated library systems. Her research focuses on metadata in large-scale aggregation projects\, data visualization\, and librarian employment patterns. \nMetadata Models for Research: Developing an Application Profile for the OSF \nGretchen Gueguen\, Center for Open Science \nAbstract: This presentation will cover the development of an application profile for the Open Science Framework (OSF)\, a diverse repository and collaboration tool geared for research. The platform was originally launched in 2012 and has added major new digital object models and workflows without a centralized metadata model. In 2022 and 2023\, staff endeavored to create a model that would both accommodate past decisions and future growth\, while retaining the unique nature of the platform which is organized around research projects\, rather than the individual digital objects that are the output of research. Using DataCite and Dublin Core as pillars\, the new model is designed for an RDF implementation\, utilizing linked data and semantic web concepts to power a new search API and interface for OSF. \nBio: Gretchen Gueguen is an archivist and librarian specializing in digital libraries and technology. She currently works at the Center for Open Science on the Open Science Framework (OSF) and is an adjunct professor for the PennWest – Clarion University Department of Information and Library Science. Gretchen has managed metadata services\, digitization\, and repository development at several universities including the University of Maryland\, East Carolina University\, and the University of Virginia\, as well as part of the Digital Public Library of America. She currently works with an international network of academic institutions and other research organizations as part of the OSF Institutions Membership Program. \nBest regards\, \nBCMIG Co-Chairs: Emily Baldoni\, Benjamin Riesenberg \nBCMIG Co-Vice-Chairs: Irma Fraticelli\, Xiying Mi

SUMMARY:LD4 2024 Conference: Building Community for Linked Open Data
DESCRIPTION:About the conference\nJoin us to learn concrete ways that linked data benefits GLAM institutions\, and discover pathways to participation in linked data. Whether you have already implemented linked data in your work or are just getting started\, you will leave with a better understanding of linked data\, how it can be used\, and what you can do to get started. Continue growing established linked data initiatives with insights from experienced practitioners. By bringing together a broad range of perspectives\, and centering diversity\, equity\, inclusion\, and ethics in our discussions\, we will continue fostering a community of practice for linked data in libraries.  \nRegister via Sched: https://2024ld4.sched.com/

SUMMARY:Data Cleaning with OpenRefine
DESCRIPTION:Interested in OpenRefine? Join Marriott Library’s own Research Data Librarians\, Kaylee Alexander and Madison Golden\, on October 24 for this FREE 2-hour workshop on this powerful data cleaning tool! This workshop is a part of a fall learning series by DELPHI\, the University of Utah Data Exploration and Learning for Precision Health Intelligence Data Science Initiative. \nDetails:\nWhat: Before you can analyze data you need to clean it. Data cleaning identifies errors and corrects formatting to create consistent data. This step must be taken with extreme care and attention because without clean data the results of analysis may be false and non-reproducible. \nOpenRefine is a powerful free and open source tool for working with messy data: cleaning it and transforming it from one format into another. \nThis Data Carpentry workshop will teach you to use OpenRefine to clean and format data effectively and automatically track any changes that you make. Many people comment that this tool saves them literally months of work trying to make these edits by hand. \nWho: The course is aimed at graduate students\, postdocs\, staff\, faculty\, and other researchers across campus who are interested in learning how to use OpenRefine for data cleaning. You do not need to have coding experience or any previous knowledge of OpenRefine to attend this workshop. \nRequirements: Participants must bring a laptop onto which they can download OpenRefine. Please download OpenRefine before the workshop). \nContact: Please email andrew.george@hsc.utah.edu or rebecca.barter@hsc.utah.edu for more information.

SUMMARY:Western History Association - Award deadlines approaching!
DESCRIPTION:Heads up\, western US history scholars! \nThe Western History Association strives to be a congenial home for the study and teaching of all aspects of North American Wests\, frontiers\, homelands\, and borderlands. Their mission is to cultivate the broadest appreciation of this diverse history. \nTwo of WHA’s awards have deadlines coming up fairly soon. \nFirst\, the Autry Public History Prize is awarded annually to media exhibits\, public programs\, or written works that contribute to a broader public reflection and appreciation of the past or serve as a model of professional public history practice in the history of the North American West. The award consists of a $1\,000 prize and a certificate to the award recipient. The prize is made possible by the generous support of the Autry Museum of the American West. The deadline to submit is April 15\, 2025. \nThe WHA Council created the Louise Pubols Public History Prize to honor Pubols’ prize-winning publications\, landmark exhibitions\, and extraordinary service to the WHA. In keeping with Louise’s deep commitment to public history\, the Pubols Prize will support the attendance of a public historian to the WHA’s annual meeting [in Albuquerque\, NM\, October 15-18\, 2025]. The overwhelming generosity of donations from Louise’s friends and family fully-funded this prize in the fall of 2017 in its inaugural year. The deadline for submissions is June 30\, 2025. \nThe prize will include complimentary registration\, a ticket to the Awards Banquet\, and $500 to offset travel expenses to this year’s WHA Conference. \nYou can learn more about all of WHA’s awards on their Awards overview page.
