It’s suddenly May and we are pleased to highlight several upcoming learning opportunities.

The DPLA Metadata Working Group’s Reparative Description workshop series draws to a close next Friday, May 10 with a Special Projects in Reparative and Inclusive Description session. Four presenters will discuss approaches they took to these projects at their home institutions. Please register here.

Next, the DPLA Rights Statements Working Group will present on May 23 about Standardized Rights Statements. This introductory session on the simple, standardized system of labels that more clearly communicate the copyright and re-use status of digital objects to the public will include members of the Working Group, many of whom are currently implementing rights statements for the collections they manage. Building on February’s OpenRefine introduction, early June brings us Reconciling Metadata with OpenRefine! This OpenRefine 2.0 session by Helen Baer, Digital Projects Librarian at Colorado State University, a member of the Plains to Peaks Collective, will cover basics of how and why you might use OpenRefine to standardize metadata against controlled vocabularies like the Getty Art & Architecture Thesaurus™. This session will take place June 4 at 11AM Mountain/10AM Pacific and you can register here.

MWDL tabled at the joint National Council on Public History/Utah Historical Society conference in Salt Lake City (UT) on April 11-12. By any measure, it was a great opportunity to connect with historians of all types. We talked to nearly 70 historians face-to-face over the two days and added 25 new users to our news list.
