Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, UTC Chapter Scrapbooks

This collection consists of three scrapbooks compiled by officers of the Utah Technical College at Provo (UTC-P) chapter of Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA). The scrapbooks include photographs of members and events, chapter newsletters, and programs from conferences and competitions attended by chapter members.

Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA), now known as SkillsUSA, was a national career and technical student organization that encouraged technical school students to develop leadership and career skills. VICA sponsored state and national competitions, and Utah Technical College at Provo won many of these events. The UTC-Provo chapter was organized in 1969 with the assistance of Don Pendergrass, an auto body instructor. Most of the chapter’s original eight student members were in the auto body field. Membership expanded over time, and by the period covered by these scrapbooks (1973-1977), the chapter included nurses, dental assistants, machinists, draftsmen, electricians, and students in auto body and auto mechanics programs. In 1973, the UTC-Provo chapter was the third-largest VICA chapter in the nation, with 315 members.
