Welcome RootsTech-nologists!

Welcome and thanks for visiting Mountain West Digital Library! MWDL is a central search portal for digital collections about the Mountain West region. A network of universities, colleges, public libraries, museums, historical societies, and government agencies, counties, and municipalities in Utah, Nevada, Oregon, and other parts of the U.S. West have been scanning their historical resources to make them available online. These include unique resources of value to family historians and genealogists, such as:
- Family photographs from the 19th and early 20th centuries
- Personal diaries and journals from 19th century pioneers and settlers of Western states.
- Interviews with members of diverse groups such as uranium miners, war veterans of many theaters, Latter-day Saint missionaries, and Japanese Americans who were forcibly interned in concentration camps during World War II.
- Personnel records of employers such as Kennecott Copper Company’s records of individual miners and Hawaiian sugar plantation records of Filipino workers.
- Correspondence related to Nevada’s railroad industry and the Western mining industry at large
- Maps and photographs of historical migration routes such as the Oregon Trail.
- College and high school yearbooks
This post was researched and written by Ken Rockwell, Librarian at University of Utah, J. Willard Marriott Library, MWDL Outreach Working Group member, and resident genealogist.
